Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome your Second Grader, and you as parents, to Room 11 at Napa Junction, and to a new school year. I hope that you all had a great summer and that your child is ready to begin an exciting new school year. Something that's new and exciting for me is that Mrs. Susan Mullet (whom many of you probably know) will be teaching our class on Fridays. She brings with her 38 years of experience, a great artistic talent, and is full of enthusiasm about being able to teach second grade again (she's been teaching fourth for a couple of years.
In order to get off to a good start, please read the following IMPORTANT information carefully.
First of all, please make sure that the items, clothing, etc. that your child brings to school are labeled legibly. Kids being kids tend to leave things in odd places and labeling items will give them a better chance of being returned to their proper owner.
Within the first weeks, there will be important papers sent home that must be signed and returned immediately. All papers for you to read/sign this year will be in your child’s homework folder.
HOMEWORK—Is is very important that your child brings the folder to school each day. It will be sent home at the beginning of the week (on Monday unless there’s a holiday). Your child is to complete the daily assignment on the cover sheet, then turn in his/her folder the next morning. (It would probably be easier if the folder is kept in his or her backpack.) Friday is the day I keep the folders and put in new homework and then your son or daughter will bring it home again on Monday. Homework will consist of:
· 20-25 minutes of reading a day--which must be entered on the reading log (see below), Monday through Thursday
· 10-20 minutes of practice in Math, Language Arts and/or Spelling
· ** If children get behind in their class work, it will be sent home periodically as weekend homework (though I usually give them a week to return it).
Please make sure to check and initial your child’s homework folder every day!
RAH (our Read At Home program) reading logs will initially come home in the homework folder. Please keep this at home until it is complete. For every 20-25 minutes your child reads, you are to fill in the name of the book and the number of minutes read. When ten rows, or 200-250 minutes, have been accomplished, sign the reading log at the bottom and have your child bring it in. S/he will get a happy face on the reading chart and s/he will get to go to the prize box. It will then--with reminders--be his or her responsibility to pick up a new log and bring it home.
Please, encourage your child to read. Studies show that READING is what makes children better readers. Also, as you listen to or read to your child, it is a wonderful, relaxing time just between the two of you.
CLASSROOM RULES: The class has been discussing the school/classroom rules for the past couple of weeks and have been asked to share them with you. They are as follows:
· Be kind.
· Be safe.
· Be respectful.
· Be responsible.
· Do your best.
If you are interested in helping out in the classroom, we could really use some help in these first couple of months getting materials ready (at home or at school) and some help monitoring the other children when we're doing individual testing. In a month or two, we will need help during reading groups and centers. More information will follow. We will also need a volunteer for room mother or father (if you enjoy organizing and calling for parties and special events, this could be fun).
If you have specific concerns about your child, we can set up an appointment. Please call (253-3461) or drop by the school after student hours, or contact Ms. Mullet or me by email eseput@nvusd.k12.ca.us or smullet@nvusd.k12.ca.us .
Sincerely,
Elaine Seput Susan Mullet
